Hello! My name is Ksenia. I have been living in Greece for 15 years and teaching Greek online at the school Skype-Language.com. You can view my teacher profile at the link.
Over the years of teaching, I have noticed that one of the most common difficulties for beginners is memorizing the Greek alphabet. Many people find that the letters get confused with Latin ones, and some letters just don’t stick at all. Perhaps you have also faced this — don’t worry, you are not alone.
Based on my experience, I decided to write this article to help you overcome this initial barrier. Believe me, difficulties with the alphabet are a temporary phenomenon. With a little practice and the right approach, you will soon begin to distinguish the letters and read Greek with confidence.
It is important to remember: everyone learns new material at their own pace. Some grasp things quickly, others need a bit more time. The main thing is not to lose motivation, to be patient and persistent. Very soon, you will see progress.
How to memorize the Greek alphabet?
To begin with, set yourself up for positivity: memorizing the alphabet is not a boring task, but a creative process. Imagine that you are a researcher deciphering ancient symbols. Make the learning process exciting: turn your alphabet into an art project, create flashcards, and label objects around your home with them.
When studying the alphabet, be sure to use additional resources: watch educational videos, listen to audio materials, and read aloud. The more channels of perception you engage, the easier the memorization process will be — for example, this one:
Or the following examples of words:
а) ΦΩΝΗΤΙΚO ΑΛΦΑΒΗΤO ME ΠΑΡΑΔΕΙΓΜΑΤΑ

Groups of Letters for Memorization
To make things clear let us divide the letters into the following groups:
The first group - the letters that do not normally cause any difficulty. Such letters prevail:
Letter | Name and Transcription |
Α, α | Alpha, [а] |
Β, β | Vita, [v] |
Ε, ε | Epsilon, [е] |
Ι, ι | Iota, [I] |
Κ, κ | Kappa, [к] |
Μ, μ | Mi, [м] |
Ο, ο | Omicron, [о] |
Π, π | Pi, [p] |
Τ, τ | Tau, [t] |
Φ, φ | Phi [f] |
The second group - the letters that are often confused with the Latin Letters:
Letter | Name and Transcription |
Η, η | Eta, [i] |
Ν, ν | Ni, [n] |
Ρ, ρ | Rho, [r] |
Χ, χ | Chi, [h] |
Υ, υ | Upsilon, [i] |
As you can see, some letters of the Greek alphabet look similar to Latin ones but are pronounced completely differently. To avoid confusion, it’s important to recognize from the very beginning that you’re dealing with a different alphabet, and those familiar shapes are simply a visual trap. One simple but effective technique is to use associations: imagine that Ρ growls, Χ laughs, and Η hiccups. Don’t worry — very soon your brain will start to automatically distinguish these letters and read them correctly without effort.
This group - strange, unfamiliar letters:
Letter | Name and Transcription |
Ζ, ζ | Zeta, [z] |
Ξ, ξ | Xi, [ks] |
Ψ, ψ | Psi, [ps] |
Σ, σ, ς | Sigma, [s - sh] |
Ω, ω | Оmega, [o] |
These squiggles either merge with the other letters or weave with each other, you need some practice to remember!
Attention! Please note the letters that give "special" sounds!
Letter | Name and Sound Description |
Γ, γ | Gamma, in most cases it is similar to the Ukranian [g] without aspiration. Before [i] and [e] gives [j] |
Λ, λ | Lambda, it is between the soft [l'] and hard [l] |
Θ, θ | Theta, A dental sound like in «three» |
Δ, δ | Delta*, A voiced dental sound like in «this» |
Let us take another look at the Greek alphabet:
As you can see, most of the Greek letters are familiar to you, you just need to have a little bit more practice.
If the Greek alphabet is not memorized logically, try to remember your childhood. Your positive attitude and good mood are two ways to success!
The Best Practice Methods: Songs, Visualization, Games
Tip №1: Use songs
Musical memory is one of the most powerful tools in language learning. Songs and rhythms help the brain structure information more easily. Even if it feels like you're "just listening," your brain is actively memorizing sound sequences and associating them with the image of the letter.
Here are some songs about the Greek alphabet:
а) ΕΝΑ ΓΡΑΜΜΑ ΜΙΑ ΙΣΤΟΡΙΑ | Το Τραγούδι της Αλφαβήτου
b) «Το τραγούδι της Αλφαβήτας» with subtitles
You need not only listen to the songs but also sing and learn by heart.
If children's songs are not very interesting, here is a philosophical song about the alphabet (the video is subtitled):
The lyrics:
σκόνη γίνεται κι η πέτρα – becomes dust and stone
μοιάζει η νίκη με την ήττα – a victory resembles a defeat
Βι, γα, δε, ζι, θι
κα, λα, μι, νι, ξι
φι, χι, ψι
πόσο αξίζει μια στιγμή – how precious one moment is
φεύγω μα σε καρτερώ – I am leaving but waiting for you
μια παλικαριά `ναι ή φεύγα – courage or flight
Tip №2: Print Out the Greek Alphabet
To memorize the alphabet better, print out its visual version and hang the sheets in a conspicuous place. In the beginning you could also write the translation but remember that not all the Greek letters have correspondences in your language.
Tip №3: Visualization and Cartoons
Try to visualize the letters. Think what the most challenging Greek letters look like and make a funny picture for each letter. Ideas can be taken from Greek cartoons about the alphabet: even if you may not understand the whole text of the cartoon, you are sure to remember a flying and singing letter!

You can also come up with a short story for each letter. For example, the letter Ψ (psi) could be a traveler with a walking stick (the long leg of the letter), and the letter Λ (lambda) might represent a mountain peak. These kinds of associations engage your imagination, which greatly improves memorization.

Tip №4: Mobile Apps and Quizzes
And how can you learn to write Greek letters correctly? Here, YouTube comes to the rescue (for example, Μαθαίνω να γράφω — a whole series on how to write each letter), as well as various mobile apps, such as Greek Alphabet Writing.
By following the links below, you'll find quizzes with tasks like “match the pair,” “form a word,” and more.
Tips №5: Writing and Dictation
Finally you can use textbooks:
a) write each letter several times;
b) write the dictated letters in alphabetical or random order.
Tip №6: The “Letter of the Day” Method
Each day, choose one letter and focus on it: pronounce it, write it, look for words that begin with it, create associations — and soon you’ll master the entire alphabet without stress and with enjoyment.
Additional Tips and Motivation
Remember, the alphabet is just the beginning, but how confidently you learn it will influence your future progress. Don’t compare yourself to others and don’t rush — language learning favors attentive and patient students. Allow yourself to learn with joy.
The alphabet and pronunciation rules have been learnt, now it is high time you started reading. How to practise reading is going to be another article.
